My husband, an excellent cook, has come up with a great way to visit his parents 400 miles distant. He cooks a meal that he can easily take with him. Previous items have been lasagna and a pot of lentil soup. He drives there one day, shares a meal with them (and other family members who may show up), spends the night, and returns home the next day. He's fine with the driving, he gets to enjoy his family, and it puts very little burden on his parents. This is a great favor to both them and him.
