March 5--Not Letting Fear of Heights Stop Me!

Love doesn't need reason. It speaks from the irrational wisdom of the heart.
--Deepak Chopra

We had a relaxed morning wherein we did not have to leave the hotel until 9:45. We drove to the SkyRail, which I thought was a train. "Rail"--get it? Oh, no, it's a gondola ride to the top of the very tall mountains we saw flying into Cairns. It took me a while to open my eyes and I am very grateful for my experienced yoga breathing. I finally peeked out, and by nervously chattering with my gondola mates, was able to get over my terror.
Our first stop had a boardwalk through the jungle, showing off an infinite amount of vegetation. The only critter I saw was a good-sized spider. Our second stop was the highlight--a boardwalk led us to Barron Falls, photo below. Even as far away as we were, the flow is very loud. Once we arrived at the top (this is the 3rd time in the gondola), we had time for lunch and shopping in the town of Kuranda. One of our merry group of four had kangaroo pie, and proclaimed it not much different from beef. We had a winding drive down the mountain by a bus driver who told us he had the flu. Geez.
We had time to rest and shower before being bussed to dinner. We had dinner at a waterfront restaurant, quite lovely.
Lanie and I have been traveling together for many years, and when we encounter a Ferris wheel in a new city, we go for it. She is always willing, I am always terrified. Imagine my thrill/dismay to discover that there is one in Cairns about 200 yards from our hotel. So when we returned from dinner, we went straight through our hotel and got on the Reef Eye. I was much less scared than usual, I guess because the SkyRail had already scared the bejeezus out of me.
    Enough thrills for one day!!!
