The outback we were in yesterday can go as much as ten years without rain. Let's just say that I didn't mind leaving there. We flew to Cairns (pronounced 'cans') on the northeast coast of Australia. It's basically tropical rainforest climate, which I describe as being in an never-ending hot flash. So the temperature is a bit lower, but the humidity is WAY higher. It is beautiful--lush forests, mountains, ocean. We are staying in the super-modern Flynn Hotel that has more light switches than I have ever seen in a hotel room. There's even a light strip built into the wall of the shower. We are here for three nights.
Lanie and I settled into our room, then went out for a walk along the waterfront. We ran into another traveler we have come to enjoy, and the three of us roamed to the central shopping mall. It was a typical mall, which we quickly decided was not our speed. We headed back toward our hotel. We were hot and sweaty and thirsty, so a stop in McGinty's Pub seemed the finest choice. I had a Coopers, an Australian beer, cold and refreshing. Then we walked to the waterfront where we encountered the Lagoon, a GIANT (yes, caps are appropriate) public swimming pool.
We finished our wandering at an Italian restaurant by our hotel where I had a fabulous meal of beef tortellini with mushrooms, bacon and cream sauce. I finished it--I couldn't stop, it was SO good. Companions had equally good spaghetti with meat sauce and lasagne.
Being the party animals we are, we were in our room and showering by 7:00.
